Ronnie Lovejoy - "Lonely Christmas"

Ronnie said this is the saddest time of the year for him because it brings back memories.  He was sitting at the kitchen table writing out his Christmas list when he saw the present that his woman had left under the Christmas tree.  Inside was a note saying she was leaving him.  Oh man, what a sad, sad, lonely song and I LOVE it.  This is at the top of my all-time favorite Christmas songs.

Oh, what a lonely place to be, I sure wish I had somebody to spend Christmas with me...

T. K. Soul - "A Little Love"

I've been following T.K. Soul for years and am a huge fan.  Was listening to this love song and had to write down the words...he's my kind of man.

Baby, how was your day today
Girl, all I thought about was you
I just need to know if you're ok
And if there's anything that I can do for you
Did you get the flowers I sent to your job
Just to show you a little love, you've been working so hard

Chorus
Just a little love
Goes a mighty long way with me
Just a little love
Goes a mighty long way

I've been counting down the hours
Been waiting for you to come home
Sent the kids to your mother's
So you and I can chill alone
Did you get the card I sent to you
Just to show I'm crazy about you

Chorus

I'm so glad we're still together
After all the things that we've been through
But through it all you stuck by me
And I appreciate you, yes I do
Did you get the diamond I left for you
Just because you do what you do

Chorus

It's just the little things
That mean a lot
It's just the little things
That mean a lot

Chorus

She takes care of the kids
And works a 9 to 5
I know when she gets home
My baby be so tired
So I run the bath water
I wash her feet
Not a thing in this world I won't do for her
Cause she's always there for me

Chorus

Bishop Bullwinkle - "Hell 2 Da Naw Naw"

This is one of those songs that is in so much demand in the south - turn on any radio station in south central Alabama and you will hear it. I've never heard of Bishop Bullwinkle but he's an interesting guy who talks/raps his way thru this record.  I don't know if he's affiliated with any church but his message in all the interviews I've heard is always positive.  In this song, he talks about people in the church and, if you listen, you'll realize that he's telling the truth.  He said that we, as people, need to get our life together.  Here are a couple of lines from the song:
People sittin' down in the church house and don't even know the words to the hymn.
They're down at the altar confessing their sins and when you see them on Monday night they're doing the same thing again.
And he also talks about kids ending up in jail and how there are consequences to your actions.
Get your life together before it's too late!

Ms. Jody - "He's Comin' In The Back Door"

Fellas, if your wife is always smiling when you get home, you better stop and find out what's going on...find out what's making her so happy!  Ms. Jody tells the story about how she used to wish that her husband would come home but now she prays for him to leave.  She found somebody else to take up the slack and while her husband's going out the front, her man's coming in the back.  'As soon as you leave baby, I'm getting what I want!!'  She also said that 'what I can't get from you, I get from him.'  She's so glad that she's found a back-door man.  Well alright now, Ms. Jody!!

Larome Powers - "Blues Shack"

I really love "What's The Name of That Thang" by Larome Powers and here is another great dance/party song from him.  I was looking for his bio and found this on the Malaco site: Presently living in Memphis, Tennessee, Larome sang and toured the West Coast during the seventies with acts such as Harvey Scales, Jesse James, Joe Tex, Millie Jackson, The Numonics, Gap Band, War, Lenny Williams, Robert Winters and Fall and many others.  It goes on to say this his goals are to become successful in the music world and inspire old and young to appreciate and become fans of the sounds of blues and southern soul music.  I like that!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Wendell B.  You have to listen to this song.  He said that he can deal with the leaks but we've got to fix that hole. Cause if we don't fix it, one day it's going to sink your boat. Southern Soul Paradise with Dr. Nick

I was honored to be Dr. Nick’s guest yesterday afternoon in Washington, D.C. on WPFW’s 89.3.  Dr. Nick hosts “Southern Soul Rumpin’” from 2- 4pm every Saturday afternoon (tune in to www.wpfw.org or 89.3 on your dial).  I had so much fun being a part of his show - he is an awesome man.  Dr. Nick gave me a chance to talk about this blog and about southern soul music which I love so dearly.  Did you know that he is the only on-air radio personality and WPFW is the only radio station in the District/MarylandVirginia area playing southern soul music?   He is definitely making a difference in the metro area and around the world.  Dr. Nick touches the lives of so many people and I look forward to listening to him for years and years to come.

Thank you Dr. Nick for caring enough to play the music!

Jaye Hammer - "Dig a Little Deeper"

Oh, do I love southern soul!  Fellas, if you've got a good woman, you've got to hold her and console her and then you got to treat her right! You've got to let her know she's the one you're thinking of.  Well alright, Jaye!  Dig a little deeper, stroke a little longer, roll a little harder (?), hold a little longer, give her what she's missing, love and kisses, you've got to please her. Ladies, if you have a man, sometimes it seems as if he doesn't understand but you know he loves you.  You also have to follow Jaye's advice. He says life is full of pressures - don't you know it!

Check out "Lay The Hammer Down" (http://southernsoulparadise.blogspot.com/2014/05/jaye-hammer-lay-hammer-down.html) and "I'm Leaving You" (http://southernsoulparadise.blogspot.com/2013/06/jaye-hammer-im-leaving-you.html) - both are fantastic Jay Hammer songs!!

Nellie "Tiger" Travis - In Concert in Virginia

Hey Mr. Sexy Man, what yo name is?  Now how many times have you ever heard someone ask that? If you’re from the south, you’ve probably heard it plenty of times.  I watched a dynamic performance over the weekend by Nellie “Tiger” Travis and loved it when she sang her signature song, Mr. Sexy Man.  We all got on the floor as she danced with us!!  She rocked the entire place with her beautiful voice and some of the songs she sang included Baby Mama Drama, Who’s Fooling Who, You Gonna Make Me Cheat, Superwoman, I’m Gonna Slap Yo Weave Off, Can I Back It up, and the oh-so popular Mr. Sexy Man.  She is a personable performer and before singing Happy Birthday, she even asked who was having a birthday.  She called each birthday person by name and showed off her amazing voice by singing a cappella.  Beautiful!

Nellie performed at the RedZone Grill in Fairfax and this venue was perfect for the show.  She makes you feel as if you're a part of her show and if you ever get a chance to see her in concert, go!

RedZone Grill in Fairfax, Virginia

I went to a blues show in northern Virginia over the weekend and had a blast.  I had never been to the RedZone Grill located on Main Street in Fairfax and it is a great club and bar.  Nellie "Tiger" Travis performed and the club provided an intimate setting - it was perfect for her show.  There is always something going on here and you can catch live performances each week. There's a great dance floor and the dee jay knew what the crowd wanted to hear. For sports enthusiasts,The Redzone Grill has plenty of TVs all through the place. The menu has a nice variety and the prices are very reasonable. Service was good and the waiters/waitresses were attentive and friendly. I've never critiqued a club but this one is worth it.  If you're in the DMV, go!!

Hardway Connection - "Don't Stay"

I have grown to love this local DC area band and enjoy their music.  I recently saw them perform in a show that featured Sir Jonathan Burton and the legendary Roy C and believe they have so much talent.
Hardway Connection does a variety of R&B with a hefty dose of southern soul packed into their lineup.  They do an excellent version of Donnie Ray's "Let's Go Dancing" but my favorite song is their spin on Laura Izibor's "Don't Stay."  Whew, you'll have to hear them live - Toni Love's voice is absolutely amazing.  I even think their version is better than the original.  Here is "Don't Stay" from one of their live performances.

T.K. Soul - "My Kind of Girl"

The Bad Boy of Southern Soul has consistently recorded great music and "My Kind of Girl" is a simple but very pretty love song.  T.K. Soul's actual name is Terence Kimble and he is a multi-talented artist who not only sings, but plays most instruments. In addition to performing, he also hosts an annual Valentine's Day Cruise and they'll be going to the Bahamas in 2015.  It sounds like it's going to be a blast and I would love to take this cruise one day.  For more info about T.K. Soul and his upcoming cruise, take a look at his website: http://www.thebadboyofsouthernsoul.com/.

Say you’re my kind of woman
Yes you are
Beautiful lady, my shining star
Girl I’m so proud
To be here with you
You’re a beautiful lady and that’s why I caught you
I had almost given up on love, then you came along
Thought all women were the same
And I was wrong
You’ve shown me things I have never seen
You’re a lady, the real thing

Chorus
My kind of girl, yes you are
You are a queen, my shining star
My kind of girl, yes you are
You are a queen, my shining star

Heaven’s missing an angel
Cause you’re here with me
Got me pouring out my heart
And that’s so hard for me
After all these silly games
I found a love
One who understands yeah
I know she’s sent from above
She showed me things
I have never seen
You’re a lady, the real thing

Chorus

All of my friends say I’ve changed
Say I can’t have a conversation
Without the mention of her name

She makes sure I’m satisfied
With everything she gives
Well if that ain’t enough
I don’t know what it is
You’ve shown me things
That I have never ever seen
You’re a lady, the real thing

Chorus

O.B. Buchana - "Just Be A Man About It"

Just be a man about it, just like I was to you.  O.B. took another man’s woman and the other guy began spreading rumors instead of facing up to the truth..  O.B. said that he didn’t sneak behind the guy’s back and was man enough to tell him what was going on; he let him know that he was taking his girl.  He knows that losing the girl was hard but expects the other guy to stop acting like a child and be a man about it.  Well, I think this is a tough situation.  The rational side of you probably says you were man enough to let him know and the other guy should be man enough to take it.  Life, unfortunately, doesn't always work that way.  The rational often becomes irrational in the game of love.  Don't you think?

I have a special place in my heart for Frank Mendenhall who was from my hometown of Camden, Alabama.  He was only 59 years old when he passed in 2007 and I regret not knowing him.  He left some great music and I've posted some of his other songs; check them out when you get a chance. "Time" is a very pretty ballad with his unique sound.  He says that time is winding down and the clock is ticking. I hope you'll enjoy the music.

Johnnie Taylor - "Drown In My Own Tears"

I posted this Johnnie Taylor song back in 2011 and had to repost it again.  It is absolutely amazing. Johnnie tells his girl that she ought to come on home so he won't be all alone.  The legendary Ray Charles made this record many years ago and JT's remake turned a really good song into a great one! Here are some of the words:

It brings a tear to my eyes
When I begin to realize
I’ve cried so much oh since you‘ve been gone
I’ve almost drowned in my own tears
I sit and cry, oh just like a child
My pouring tears they’re running wild
If you don’t think
Oh that you’ll be home soon
I said I believe I’m going to drown right now baby in my own tears

Tyrone Davis - "It's a Miracle"

I thought I knew most Tyrone Davis records but I don't remember this from 1988. WBFZ (of Selma) and WKXN (of Montgomery) have been playing this for awhile and I just love it.  It's a sweet song about finding a lost love - how romantic!!

I was walking down the street one day
She was just a glimpse, so far away
But the closer I got to her
Well, more and more she looked so familiar
That same sexy sway of her hips
That same loving smile on her lips
We were almost close enough to touch
But I dare not though I wanted to so much

Chorus
Thought I would never see you again
Never another night with you I’d spend
But I kept the faith baby
And I prayed every night that you’d come back in my life
It’s a miracle
That’s what it is, that’s what it is
Say it’s a miracle
That’s what it is, that’s what it is

My blood is racing through my vein
A feeling starting that I can’t explain
My pulse quickens, heart’s beating fast
Thank God I finally found her at last

I said Sally and she just looked at me
I said Sally, baby, don’t you recognize me
Though I was wrong
I want to make it right
Let me make it up to you
Cause I finally see the light

Chorus

And I prayed every night that you'd come back to my life!

I attended the Bluebird Blues Festival, a great, free, musical event held each year at the Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland.  It was a sunny, beautiful day and the blues bands were really good.  One of these bands was the Hardway Connection, a popular group from the Washington, D.C. metro area.  I've seen them perform several times and they are always great and are definitely a crowd pleaser.  A few of the songs they performed included "Let's Go Dancing," "Can I Back It Up," "All Night Blues," "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart," and much more.   Their style is a mix of southern soul and r&b, something you don't hear that often when you leave the south.

These festivals are also a great way to meet other blues and southern soul lovers.  A special hello to Marlene who kept me company!

Grady Champion - "On The Southside"

I love this record by Grady Champion, a young blues singer and harmonica player.  Here's a live version of "On The Southside" and I'll keep looking for the CD version which is from his "Bootleg Whiskey" CD.  This is pretty popular in central and south Alabama.

Ms. Jody & O.B Buchana - "One-Way Love"

You can't go wrong when you blend Ms. Jody and O.B.Buchana together!  "One-Way Love' is a story about a couple who stays together, no matter how much people talk about them.  They have a never-ending love for each other.  She said that his daddy gave her a nasty look and he said that even his mama told him that she didn’t know how to cook.  Yeah, your family can sometimes mess with you.

What they don’t understand is that when they’re through talking,
we’ll still be holding hands!

TK Soul - "She Told On Herself"

Born Terence Kimble in the southern town of Winnfield, Louisiana, TK Soul began his love for music and musical instruments at the early age of 7.  He is living proof that you are born with certain talents!

TK Soul overheard his wife talking on the phone to her girlfriend - she just kept on talking and told it all. He didn't want to believe she was lying and cheating but he heard it himself.  Alright ladies, remember this lesson!

She Told On Herself" is taken from TK Soul's "The Evolution of Soul CD."

Ms. Jody, one of my favorite performers!  She said that her man is her candy man and he's good to her; he's sweet, sweet, sweet!  He makes her feel great from her head to her feet!!!

BTW, I'm not sure why they used this picture for her album cover, but it doesn't do Ms. Jody justice - she looks fantastic in person!

Terry Wright (Official Behind The Scenes Video) - "Lost My Good Thang"

I posted this song a little while ago but here is a copy of the almost-11 minutes-behind-the-scenes video. (Check out Karen Wolfe.) The actual song is below the behind-the-scenes video. "Lost My Good Thang" is still heavily in rotation on blues radio stations in the south, probably because it is such a good song.  The melody and words seem to stay in your mind and there's no telling when you may break out in song and sing "I done lost my good thang..."

Little Milton - "Little Bluebird"

Little Milton was the man!  And could he play the guitar!! I'm thankful I had a chance to see him before he passed. This is just really a great, great song. The music is phenomenal. He says that the Little Bluebird has been flying around so long and he wishes that she would land in his tree. My favorite line in this song is when he says oh, Little Bluebird, it's true that I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you!!!! Boy, you can't help but believe him when he says that!!

I love this song - enjoy!

Steve Perry - "Live My Life Again"

Here's a southern soul song with a beautiful message that needs to be heard!  I've been hitting repeat and playing this over and over. (It sounds as if the writer of this song is speaking from experience.) Steve tells both old and young people to get off drugs because they will kill you. Drinking, gambling, cocaine, crack, reefer, smoking, running around - it's no good for you. Look at the graveyards he said - they are filled. Now isn't that the truth!  Take a look at these lyrics. Oh, if I could live my life again!!

If your life is messed up
You better make a change
Don’t let nobody fool you
Even you gotta change
Somebody said this to me the other day
Oh I never will forget it
If only I could live my life again
Ah what a change I would make for my own sake
I’ll find me a job, put my money in the bank
And then I’ll stop running around
With every woman in town
I’ll do anything right now
If I could live my life again
If I could start all over again

Listen, I used to be married, oh what a family I had
Tres little girls and two little boys
My wife packed up and left me
She even took my kids
I’ll do anything right now
If I could live my life again
If I could turn back the hands of time

You see, I was talking to a young man
The other day and this is what I heard him say
Drinking, and gambling, cocaine, and crack
I won’t do that no more
Even reefer y’all, I don’t smoke that no more
And then I heard him say this
I’ll start this with all my so called friends
Even all of my scandalous kin folks
I’ll do anything tonight
If I could live my life again
If I could turn back the hands of time
I got one more thing I want to say
To all of you young people in the world
See there’s a whole lot of young people in the world
Who don’t believe in nothing
But young people while you have a chance, remember this
Drinking and gambling
Cocaine and crack
Reefer and smoking
Running around ain’t no good
Listen, give it up
If you’re on drugs, give it up
Give it up
Don’t let nobody fool you
Give it up, say this to yourself - everybody
You’ve got a chance, I got a chance
Everybody got a chance
You’ve got a chance, I got a chance
Everybody got a chance
If you’re on drugs
Give it up
Old people,
Give it up, don’t let nobody fool you
Give it up
Young people, I don’t care who you are
Give it up…

Enjoy!

J-Wonn featuring Big Yayo - "One For The Road"

J-Wonn is an incredible young, new artist whose songs are skyrocketing to the top of the charts.  Radio stations are still playing "I Got This Record" and it was released more than a year ago.  All of his music has been really, really good. The lyrics in his songs are amazingly simple and maybe that's the attraction we have. Or, it could be the melodies.  I don't know.  What I do know is that whatever he's doing is working.  In "One For The Road," J-Wonn talks to the ladies and fellas, steppers and swingers, and single ladies and players.  He tells them to handle their business and get one for the road - whether it's a drink, that last dance, or that elusive phone number. His simplicity is genius.

P.S. J-Wonn doesn't say actually say "go get you one for the road;" it sounds more like 'go on' or 'gone' get you one for the road.  But since I don't know how to capture it accurately, I'll leave it as it is.  Sorry J-Wonn!

Ladies and fellas
It’s bout the time to go
It’s bout the time to go
Now if you haven’t hit the bar
To give yourself a drink
Go get you one for the road
Go get you one for the road

Steppers and swingers
It’s bout the time to go
It’s bout the time to go
Now if you haven’t hit the dance floor
To get your groove on
Go get you one for the road
Go get you one for the road

Single ladies and players
It’s bout the time to go
It’s bout the time to go
Now if you haven’t got her number
Go ahead and get your phones out
And get you one for the road
Go get you one for the road

Marvin Sease - "I'm Coming Home"

You ever hear a guy begging a woman for another chance?  Um hmm, it's usually because he's done wrong and knows it.  In "I'm Coming Home," the Marvelous Marvin Sease tells his girl that he is sorry that he left her for someone else.  He does admit that he thought the grass was greener on the other side and so here he is asking for forgiveness and begging his heart out. If you were in the same situation, would you give your guy another chance?????

I left you baby
For another woman, yes I did
You see I thought the grass was greener
On the other side of the fence
And ooh suddenly oh I realized girl
Oh girl that I was wrong
So wrong baby

So baby, girl if you don’t mind
I’m coming home to you
Yes, I am
Girl, I’m coming back home to you
Please let me back in baby
I can’t take it

I know it’s wrong what I’m asking of you baby
And I do realize girl, oh baby life goes on
And you might have found someone else, girl
But baby if it’s not too late
I’m coming home to you
Yes I am, yes I am
I’m coming back home to you
Please, please baby
I’m coming back home to you

I can’t take it baby
Hey Tony, can I use your telephone, man, please
Thank you
(telephone call - begging his woman, asking for one more chance)

You see baby, I found out something about all my friends
They were jealous of you
And they were jealous of me, baby
They were jealous of you
And they were jealous of me
So baby, girl if you don’t mind
I’m coming home to you
Please let me come back home baby
Let me come back home, please
One more chance girl
Girl I'm coming back home to you
Oh I'm hurting so bad baby
Give me one more chance...

Denise LaSalle - "You Should Have Kept It In The Bedroom"

Denise tells a story that every woman needs to hear.  She lets us know what happens when we brag about all of the good things our man does to us - we need to keep all of that to ourselves!!  I know that's right.

Some of the lines of this song....
I'd rather go through hell, girl, then give you back this man.
All the things you said he was doing is what made me want to try it.
You should have kept it in the bedroom if you didn't want nobody else to get none.
You made it sound so good, I just had to get me some.
Now I'm agreeing with you baby, he's the best damn thing i ever had.

What a great lesson!!

Will Easley - "Your Love Amazes Me" and Concert Review

As soon as my sister and I walked through the door of the Lena Powell Center in Camden, Alabama, we were pleasantly surprised when Will Easley walked out of the dressing room and spent some time talking with us. Do you know how great that was!!! He thanked us for coming to the show and didn't mind taking a picture with us.  I think this is the third time that I have seen him and he has been the same each time!  He’s a gentleman and you get an old school vibe when you talk with him.  Will is a humble man and is truly a nice guy. His goal is to make sure his fans enjoy themselves.

Here is a lineup of the songs he sang that night:
I Got You
Just Because
Wiggle When You Walk
Turn Back the Hands of Time
Your Love Amazes Me
Mustang Sally
Hole in the Wall
Signed, Sealed, & Delivered
A medley of throw-back hits
Never Would Have Made it

As you can see from the above list, he sang a wonderful selection of music.  One thing I liked about Will's show was that he circulated throughout the crowd and sang to all of the women in the place - and he also talked to the guys!  It was very interactive and he made us feel that we were important to his show.  While he sang, he’d hold a lady's hand and even kiss someone on the cheek.  We definitely felt special!!  I think the thing I liked the most (and he does this at every show) is when he stopped and said thank you to his fans.  Will says that a lot of entertainers don’t stop to thank the people who helped them get to where they are – the people who have made them successful.  He wanted to let us know that he appreciates us and he closed with the gospel song, “Never Would Have Made It.”

Will is a class act and I will see him every chance I can.  You should, too!!
